As we wave goodbye to what’s been a heavy year, full of uncertainty and big transitions and emotional stagnation for many, we thought we’d look at how to rid the physical body of stagnation and anything that we don’t want to carry into 26! As Bessel van der Kolk says, the body certainly keeps the score. When we feel anxious or down our natural instinct is hibernation and hiding away which can lead to disrupted sleep, general malaise and energy dips-often feeling ‘wired but tired’! Then December arrives, and we go into overdrive, more stressors, less routine and a general feeling of never being quite as up to date as we’d like. So, this week I wanted to take a moment to talk about a treatment that raises many questions (and sometimes eyebrows) – and that’s Colonic Hydrotherapy. Whether you’re curious or nervous, here’s an honest look at what this treatment involves, and who it can help. What is it? Colonic Hydrotherapy uses clean water to stimulate peristalsis, which is wave-like contractions through the bowel that lead to emptying. It’s a popular treatment for people struggling with constipation, bloating, IBS (note: not the same as IBD) and digestive irregularity, as well as those looking for a clean slate or simply to feel lighter. What can I expect? Before booking an appointment, we encourage you to check the list of contra-indications – as there are some instances in which colonic hydrotherapy may not be suitable for you. Before your appointment we’ll ask you to complete a confidential health questionnaire, this helps us to prepare for your visit and is the safest way of treating you-the more detail you can offer us at this stage the better. On the day of your appointment we have a short consultation, building on what you’ve already told us in that form, this helps us make recommendations that can support your gut health beyond the treatment space. When it’s time to begin we’ll give you a generous drape for your bottom half so that you don’t feel exposed or cold. We’ll feel your abdomen, and then ask you to roll to your side for a digital rectal examination. This is quick and painless, using a lubricated forefinger to feel for any abnormalities, and helps the insertion of the speculum glide in smoothly. It’s through this speculum, which is attached to a waste pipe, that we can empty the bowel of gas and faecal matter. This might sound exposing, but overall there is very little time that we actually spend with eyes on your anatomy – and as soon as everything is connected you’ll be completely covered. The treatment process involves very gentle ‘fills’ and releases of water, always using client communication and consent around your level of comfort. We use deep abdominal massage techniques to encourage the bowel to release what it’s holding. Thanks to our closed system there is no contact with waste or smell, and your dignity is preserved at all times. In fact, many of our clients report it was much more comfortable than they expected! (Read to the bottom for a photo of a colonic in action – covered and supported.) After the treatment we’ll send you to the toilet where you can take your time to get settled. Sometimes only water comes out, for others there may be a little more happening. When you’re ready we welcome you back, either for a gut-health boosting probiotic implant, or simply to receive your simple aftercare advice. When the treatment is over you are welcome to take your time in our Reception area, no need to hit the road until you are settled and ready. Is there anything you’d like to know about Colonic Hydrotherapy? We know asking these questions can feel a little awkward or nerve-wracking. This is a treatment we’re passionate about destigmatising and sharing the benefits widely – so we’re here for all your questions. It’s our job to make sure you feel safe, confident and supported. We keep a list of FAQs and new questions help us expand this. One last thing 🎁 A gentle reminder that our Gift Vouchers are available for all your Christmas shopping needs! Give the person you care about the freedom to choose between our full range of restorative or remedial treatments, while supporting a small independent business. Instead of clutter, gift them health and joy this year. Big love, Tracy
