TMJ Massage At Hackney Podiatry & Health

This focused treatment relieves tension in the jaw, face, neck and shoulders – areas that are often affected by temporomandibular joint dysfunction (also known as TMJ/TMD).

Signs and symptoms of TMJ dysfunction include:

  • Headaches or migraines
    Teeth clenching or grinding (bruxism)
  • Pain when chewing, or moving the jaw
  • Popping, clicking or occasional dislocation of the joint
  • Limited ability to open the mouth
  • Stiffness in the neck and upper back
  • Facial tenderness or asymmetry
  • Habits like chewing gum, biting the nails, tongue or cheeks.

What to expect from this treatment?

Your first treatment begins with an assessment and consultation to understand your symptoms and how they affect your daily life. Range-of-motion testing helps identify restrictions and imbalances that may be contributing to symptoms.

Treatment can include trigger point therapy, myofacial release, intra-oral massage (optional), stretching and acupressure. These techniques restore blood flow to areas that have become tight, to reduce pain. Because many of us hold stress and emotion in the jaw, it’s not unusual to feel an emotional release or a need for extra rest afterwards. Sessions are collaborative: you guide comfort levels each time, while having the opportunity to deeply unwind.

For your first session we recommend booking 90 minutes. While some people experience relief as quickly as the first session, regular sessions are recommended for long-term relief. Follow-up sessions can be shorter at 60 minutes and target the areas most in need of attention.
