WHAT WE TREAT

Ingrown Toenail Treatment At Hackney Podiatry & Health

An ingrown toenail is caused when a piece of nail pierces the flesh of the toe. It might feel like a splinter, and can become extremely painful, inflamed or infected. In severe cases, this can cause pus and bleeding. ingrown toenails most commonly affect the big toenail, but can affect other toes. A nail that is curling (involuted or convoluted) into the flesh, but isn’t actually piercing the skin, isn’t an ingrowing toenail but can feel very painful and can also appear red and inflamed.

ingrown toenails can make everyday activities such as walking, exercise and wearing shoes extremely uncomfortable. Prompt treatment reduces the risk of infection and long-term nail problems, restoring comfort and confidence.

In an initial Podiatry appointment, our Podiatrists will examine your toe, make a diagnosis and present options that may include nail surgery. Surgical management involves removing the in-growing section of nail or removing the whole nail, and this is known as ‘nail avulsion’. The affected part of the nail or the whole nail will be removed without a skin incision, then a chemical called phenol is applied to the nail matrix to stop any new nail growing.

At Hackney Podiatry & Health, nail surgery is carried out by experienced Podiatrists under local anaesthetic, ensuring the toe is completely numb and the procedure is comfortable. Depending on your diagnosis, a section of nail or the entire nail may be removed. A chemical is applied to prevent problematic nail regrowth.

Our skilled Podiatrists are invested in your recovery and provide bespoke advice before and after nail surgery. They will invite you to a free post-surgical follow up appointment to review your healing.

Nail surgery is a safe and effective treatment for ongoing or severe nail problems, most commonly ingrowing or involuted toenails. When repeated infection, pain or inflammation impacts daily life, minor nail surgery can provide a permanent solution and prevent recurrence. Most patients return to normal activities quickly with long-lasting relief and improved confidence.
