Today is World Digestive Health Day, and the theme is ‘Nourish to Flourish.’
This week we’re here to shine a spotlight on the essential role that the digestive system plays in enhancing your quality of life – often with little or no recognition. Far from being merely a ‘human rubbish chute,’ your gut is a complex and vital command centre.
Let’s think for a moment about the incredible journey of a simple sandwich…
From the first bite, digestive enzymes are released, the first in a symphony of chemical processes. Moving through the digestive system, nutrients are extracted, compounds broken down, wastes filtered. In a marvel of efficiency and transformation, the average transit time is 24 to 72 hours – depending on your diet, hydration, stress, genetics and microbiome.
What is the gut microbiome?
A bustling community of trillions of diverse bacteria – good and bad. This ‘inner garden’ profoundly impacts your health, influencing everything from nutrient absorption to immune function and even your mood. Diversity within the gut microbiome is important for good health: with symptoms like diarrhoea being associated with poor bacterial diversity, and constipation with high methane bacteria. Nourishing your gut microbiome with a diverse, fibre-rich diet, fermented foods, and mindful eating habits is key to supporting your intricate ecosystem, leading to enhanced overall health and vitality.
The gut-brain link
The link between your gut and your brain is increasingly clear, with many recognising the gut as the ‘second brain’ – as a healthy gut often correlates with a healthy mind. Conversely, poor digestion can significantly impact your mood and overall sense of well-being. The ‘gut-brain axis’ demonstrates how discomfort, nutrient malabsorption, or an imbalanced microbiome can contribute to feelings of unhappiness, anxiety, or even stress. Understanding this powerful connection empowers us to address both physical and emotional health through a combined approach.
Gut feeling
Have you ever wondered why your tummy might rumble during a relaxing massage, acupuncture, or reflexology session? It’s often a sign that your body is shifting from a ‘fight or flight’ state to ‘rest and digest.’ Our calming treatments are designed to activate your parasympathetic nervous system, encouraging deep relaxation which directly supports optimal digestive function. This connection highlights how truly holistic care can benefit your gut health.
So next time your stomach rumbles during a treatment, please don’t apologise! Your body is doing exactly what it is supposed to and your practitioner will accept the compliment.
Inflammatory and Irritable Bowels
While this may seem so simple, sadly many people face digestive distress – from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) to the more serious and debilitating Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.
These conditions can profoundly affect daily life. While IBS is treatable – and many of our practitioners offer tailored support to help manage symptoms and enhance quality of life – Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, such as Crohn’s and Colitis, are often more complicated and lifelong diagnoses.
Proudly Skydiving for Crohn’s & Colitis UK
This August, we’re excited to share that our Clinic Director and Lead Podiatrist, Tracy, is skydiving to fundraise for Crohn’s & Colitis UK.
This is a charity close to Tracy’s heart, who do important work towards improving diagnosis and treatment, and funding research into a cure. This charity raises awareness and gives the estimated 500,000 people living with these lifelong diseases hope, comfort and confidence to live freer, fuller lives.
No donation is too small. Learn more about the work of Crohn’s & Colitis UK and help Tracy reach her target of £1000 for this incredible cause at her fundraising page.

We always appreciate hearing about the recoveries, benefits and success stories of our community.
